Located at 84 Harrington Street, East City Grill & Yakiniku brings two dining concepts
under one roof — a celebration of South African heritage and Asian flair, led by Executive
Chef Jaycee Ferreira.
At East City Grill, Ferreira’s flame-led cooking and local Wagyu define a menu rooted in
South African tradition yet shaped by Asian influence and Cape Town’s modern edge.
Across the room, Yakiniku offers an immersive Japanese-style grill experience inspired by
Tokyo’s smoky yakiniku-ya, where guests cook, share, and connect around the flame.
Housed within a landmark hemp building designed by Wolf & Wolf Architects, it’s two
flames, one destination, and a new rhythm for the city.

The novelty of grilling one's own meat did not carry the meal at this price point. Pros: Good quality and quantity of meat, very nice wine list and fairly priced (especially for the 250ml carafe/ by the glass options), flavours and textures of the prawn bento box dish, generous dessert portions. Cons: Service not ready for prime time (had to go searching for a server to take our drinks order and get us started after being seated, food arrived before drinks, no explanation of how the set menu and courses would unfold, servers cleared items from the table that were still in use/unfinished), the R895 per person price point seems justified only by the quantity and quality of wagyu beef as not much culinary art was on offer from the kitchen itself (white rice, cucumber salad, raw gem lettuce leaves were the main course, alongside the meat), the puree in the tuna tartare bento overwhelmed the fish, the naked wall of glass in the seating area looks out onto an abandoned construction project giving a post-apocalyptic ambience to the venue. Fair warning to anyone avoiding beef: no alternatives are available (chicken, pork, prawns, fish, mushrooms, tofu? Anything?). We had fun, tried a new restaurant, wouldn't go back again as is, but hope they raise their game as there are the foundations for something with potential.

Fantastic dining experience and so much fun! Cooking your own Wagyu in a beautifully decorated restaurant is highly recommended!

What a treat eating at the Yakiniku restaurant. I had the pleasure last night of trying the Yakiniku grills with the mouth watering wagu steak cuts and to die for Yakiniku sauce. (I want to bottle it and take it home). The ambiance and setting gives you a feeling of being in Japan. The experience is just something everyone has to try. I'm definitely going back.
