In December 2004, owner Niel du Bois followed his heart, gave his creative spirit free reins, took the plunge and did what many people only dream about – opening an open air restaurant literally on a beach. Where the best seafood is prepared and enjoyed in Spartan surroundings – just like on the West Coast.

The first De Vette Mossel Beach Seafood Restaurant was born. On an isolated and pristine beach at Groot Brak River near Mossel Bay.

Thanks to the continuous support by our newly found Mossel friends, De Vette Mossel grew and grew. At De Vette Mossel your hosts are local Hermanus residents, Gustave and Charne du Bois. They grew up with De Vette Mossel and love the sea and all it has to offer, as well as hosting guests.

    Wat 'n lekker ervaring vir die hele familie - hope om te doen vir die kinders en die grootmense het lekker gekuier. Die kos was uit die boonste rakke, heerlik!

    First visit to de Vette Mossel. The hosts were incredibly accommodating and friendly. One of our party forgot her jacket and the hostess offered to go home and fetch a blanket. However, the big fire in the middle of the restaurant warmed us until the delicious food arrived and warmed us from the inside. Everything worked like a well-oiled machine, yet in a very relaxed atmosphere. In spite of the crowd there was no queuing for food and there was a generous amount offered. I really appreciate the fact that any left-over food is not wasted but given to people who need it.

    Absolutely loved it! Such a lekker atmosphere, music, friendly staff and relaxed. Will definitely go again! Seafood potjie and snoek was unbelievable!

    The pensioner's special is such good value for money. A pleasant experience all-round. I definitely recommend it.

    Struggle to see the name from Gansbaai side. Can I suggest a long table next time ...we new in this area and hoped to meet people our age. Thank you for a wonderful visit ...excellent food ....and wow friendly welcoming staff ..Well done .
