Gourmet Guide Description

Here’s a refined, immersive dining experience that blends sustainability with fine dining, seamlessly. Situated in the lush surroundings of Cowie’s Hill, this restaurant, helmed by chef Johannes Richter, is celebrated for its deliberate commitment to being environmentally responsible, using seasonal fare sourced from its own garden or nearby farms. Johannes, with his fine French culinary training and passion for Asian techniques, crafts tasting menus that rotate based on the freshest ingredients available, ensuring every visit is a unique gastronomic expedition.

Dining is intimate and personal, with seating for only 30 guests, fostering a curated and interactive encounter where Johannes often presents the dishes himself. Diners can choose between a five- or seven-course tasting menu, paired with wines carefully selected by Johannes’ wife, Johanna. One standout plate is the guava, fermented acacia honey, and bitter green sorbet. Inspired by the chef’s childhood memories of guava roll, this dish brings back those sweet and tangy tastes in a nostalgic, yet sophisticated, way.

The most evocative moment comes with the mabele sour porridge and amasi granita. This clever take on a South African staple whisks one back to childhood while demonstrating the chef’s ability to reinvent traditional flavours within a fine-dining context. It’s followed by another playful reinterpretation of a TV bar, made with amasi and sorghum, leaving guests with indelible epicurean memories, old and new.

Absolutely wonderful evening tasting Keermont wines and superb locally sourced, grown and foraged KZN cuisine by the incredible Chef Richter (who had just run the Comrades Marathon) and his equally amazing and very passionate team. We absolutely loved it when the lights went out it makes the ambience even better :-), and we always enjoy Johanna's uplifting presence. Thank you. A superb evening indeed. PS Thank you for the fabulous salt ;-)

Sadly our much anticipated visit to The Living Room did not meet expectations. We travelled all the way from Jhb to experience the restaurant that received accolades for best chef, however it was really not worth the trip or cost. Portion sizes were offensively small. As someone who is small in stature, I left hungry. Needless to say, my husband was starving and dissatisfied. I found the dessert the hardest to accept as a few crumbs on the plate, was being described as a cake, accompanied by a teaspoon of ice cream. Yes, the flavours were good but really not worth it when you are only receiving a few bites to determine the flavour. I am sad to say that it appears that the restaurant is using the accolade as a reason to charge exorbitant prices. Humble Ingredients like carrots and sweet potatoes, does not justify the high price of the meal. Salmon was served in a Portion the size of my pinky. I'm afraid I still can't figure out where the value of the meal is justified. Super disappointed and regretful of my visit. I had booked a seating for my folks next week. Needless to say I have cancelled it immediately.
