Gourmet Guide™ Description

Here’s a refined, immersive dining experience that blends sustainability with fine dining, seamlessly. Situated in the lush surroundings of Cowie’s Hill, this restaurant, helmed by chef Johannes Richter, is celebrated for its deliberate commitment to being environmentally responsible, using seasonal fare sourced from its own garden or nearby farms. Johannes, with his fine French culinary training and passion for Asian techniques, crafts tasting menus that rotate based on the freshest ingredients available, ensuring every visit is a unique gastronomic expedition.

Dining is intimate and personal, with seating for only 30 guests, fostering a curated and interactive encounter where Johannes often presents the dishes himself. Diners can choose between a five- or seven-course tasting menu, paired with wines carefully selected by Johannes’ wife, Johanna. One standout plate is the guava, fermented acacia honey, and bitter green sorbet. Inspired by the chef’s childhood memories of guava roll, this dish brings back those sweet and tangy tastes in a nostalgic, yet sophisticated, way.

The most evocative moment comes with the mabele sour porridge and amasi granita. This clever take on a South African staple whisks one back to childhood while demonstrating the chef’s ability to reinvent traditional flavours within a fine-dining context. It’s followed by another playful reinterpretation of a TV bar, made with amasi and sorghum, leaving guests with indelible epicurean memories, old and new.

    Lovely experience as always; courses beautifully presented with combinations of colours, textures and flavours. The layout was comfy while the background music performance added a new dimension that added to the experience. Favourite dishes were the chicken basket and the beetroot/lamb dish which was rich and had a depth of colour. Front of house staff are friendly and service was good while some minor mistakes made in dealing with the dietary requirements at our table. Overall, wonderful experience and congratulations with your success.

    Mind blowing and beyond expectation. At last, a Durban chef who is in the same league as the renowned Cape Town and Franschhoek chefs. My wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Living Room on 11 April 2026. We got married at Chamonix in Franschhoek and try and get back annually for our gastronomic indulgence, however, were unable to this year. Johannes and Johanna are parents of children at Deutsche Schule Durban together with ours - That is where we heard of the LivingRoom. We enjoyed the 8-course meal with wine pairing. Johannes's ability to beautifully present a dish and then blow your tastebuds away is exceptional. He is interactive and personally serves some of the dishes, explaining them with a tangible passion. Johanna's ability to pair each dish with outstanding wines is out of this world. Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the wines, not one of which you will find on the shelves, is impressive. Each waiter is able to fully describe each plate with as much fervour. A truly unforgettable experience.

    It was a fantastic experience... wnderful food, a lovely setting with beautiful views and staff that make you feel like family. It was on our bucket list and exceeded all our expectations
