The LivingRoom’s aim is to showcase our provinces culinary diversity from product to plate.
Additionally, we strive to be one of the country’s flagships regarding sustainability and community development.
Since The LivingRoom launched in 2017 it has been lauded as Durban’s flagship of fine dining. Situated on the Summerhill Guest Estate, this culinary getaway is laid-back rather than luxurious, with the emphasis on authenticity and provenance. It has a traditional family ambience guests cherish. Chef Johannes Richter and his wife, Johanna, a wine aficionado, met while working in one of Berlin’s Michelin-starred restaurants. They’ve worked tirelessly, together, in an holistic manner to establish a business that is an integral part of the community. Local, enthusiastic and passionate people are part of their hospitable team, as appreciated as their strong supplier community.
The quest is to develop and delve deeper into endemic produce, and the menu reflects this ethos. Take the dessert that shone on the winter menu – truffle from southern Drakensberg, paired with local pineapple with a touch of pimento and crème fraiche from the Midlands – a veritable journey of food in KZN. It’s four small elements to share interactively. The fresh truffle in the ice cream is a perfect representation of the seasonality and care taken to create revolutionary yet real dishes, plus showcases Johannes’s classical training. The absence of fish on the menu is indicative of their commitment to sustainability.
The multi-course menus are enhanced by Johanna’s stimulating wine pairings. If you take a moment to enjoy an aperitif or parting drink in their newly created library, be sure to admire the pride of fermented ingredients and awards.
