The Dineplan guide to South Africa’s best burger joints

by | 13 May 2026

There are a lot of opinions about what makes a great burger. We’ll spare you ours. Instead, we went straight to the hundreds of thousands of Dineplan users who eat out every week, leave honest reviews, and know the difference between a patty that’s been thought about and one that hasn’t. What came back was a list that spans dedicated burger joints, farm-to-table eateries with a two-item menu, Caribbean brewpubs, and charcoal grills with Greek roots – all united by one thing: the burger is their focus and your reason to go. We’ve added the blurbs. The Dineplan users did the rest!

Nationwide

The Baron

📍Nationwide
↗ View Menu

The Baron has been flame-grilling its way through Joburg (and more recently, KZN) since 1993, and a visit is reliably satisfying. Order the Gourmet Burger – beef mixed with fresh thyme, topped with caramelised red onion, garlic mushroom and melted Brie – or keep it classic with the original Baron’s Burger, which has been earning its keep on this menu for thirty years.

Butcher Boys

📍Nationwide
↗ View Menu

If it’s a proper burger feast you’re after, Butcher Boys is one to visit. Since opening their original branch on Florida Road in Durban, they’ve been firing up the grill for over 25 years. While steaks are their claim to fame, the burgers can’t be missed. Enjoy a juicy 200g beef patty or chicken breast, served on a brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, onion and the housemade butcher’s mayo. Keep it simple or go all in with The Royale topped with bacon, and cheese and mushroom sauce. Extra hungry? The Big Boytjie is extra filling with a double patty, bacon, cheese and onion rings. Round off your meal with a glass of wine from their extensive cellar collection.

Cattle Baron

📍Nationwide
↗ View Menu

Cattle Baron has been a steakhouse fixture since 1997, and while the steaks are what built the reputation, the burger section has quietly become a destination in its own right. Twelve builds to choose from – the Nevada (bacon, avocado, camembert and toasted onions) and the Blue Cheese (bacon, preserved figs, blue cheese shavings and blue cheese sauce) are the ones that separate it from every other steakhouse burger in the Cape. The Two Fisted Jackson – double patty, double bacon, double cheddar – is there if you need it to be.

Cowfish

📍Nationwide
↗ View Menu

Cowfish does something no other spot on this list attempts – it puts handmade burgers and a serious sushi menu under the same roof, and somehow makes both worth ordering. The Full House is the burger to get: 160g beef, fried egg, double bacon, aged Gouda, and BBQ sauce at R122, which makes it one of the best-value burgers in Joburg.

Hudsons

📍Nationwide
↗ View Menu

Let the good times roll at Hudsons – a go-to spot for burgers, epic milkshakes, and ice-cold beers. Their burger line-up covers all the classics, plus a few next-level options like the Deluxe, made with a wagyu patty, garlic mayo, caramelised onions, cheese and Jameson BBQ sauce. It’s a proper feast.

RocoMamas

📍Nationwide
↗ View Menu

RocoMamas has built its entire identity around the smash burger. The Slacker – three 100g smashed beef patties, triple American cheese and sweet pickle – is the order for anyone who means business, and the Trippy Hermano, loaded with chilli con carne, guacamole, nachos chips and a chilli cheese bomb, makes a strong case for being the most chaotic but tempting burger on any menu.

Tiger’s Milk

📍Nationwide

Tiger’s Milk is the ultimate spot for “dude food” – perfect for pre-drinks, post-surf, or Burger Day celebrations with your crew. Their burger menu is filled with juicy options, like the straight-to-the-point Stepchild, a classic, plus indulgent picks like the Wagyu Burger with a wagyu beef patty, mature cheddar, spicy bacon jalapeño jam, house secret sauce, pickles, red onion and lettuce.

Prime Wagyu

📍Metropole Plaza, 98 Beach Rd, Strand, Cape Town
⭐ 4.6 on Dineplan
↗ View Menu

Prime Wagyu in Strand was founded in 2017 with a single-minded vision: locally produced craft Wagyu beef, done simply and done well. The menu is burger-first, and the sourcing is the story – every patty is 100% Wagyu, starting at R95 for the Original with tomato relish, caramelised onion and house mayo. At that price point for genuine Wagyu, it’s one of the most quietly remarkable value propositions on this entire list.

Winshaw Tasting Room and Eatery

📍Baden Powell Dr, Lynedoch, Stellenbosch
⭐ 4.9 on Dineplan
↗ View Menu

Winshaw keeps it simple to the point of being almost radical – a Stellenbosch wine farm tasting room with a menu of exactly four items. The burger is made from grass-fed Usana beef raised on the farm itself, served with house-made aioli and fries. When a kitchen has this little to hide behind, the quality of what’s on the plate tends to speak for itself.

Johannesburg

Cuisine Afrique Fire Grill

📍20 Asquith Rd, Ravenswood, Boksburg, 1459, South Africa
⭐ 4.9 on Dineplan

A Boksburg institution built entirely around the coals – open-fire kitchen, multiple grills running all day, and a burger menu that takes its sourcing seriously. The standout is the Afrique Smash Burger, made with dry-aged grass-fed beef patties smashed to order, and the Jack Daniels Wagyu Burger, built around a hormone-free, pasture-fed Karoo Wagyu patty that most burger spots wouldn’t dare put on a menu at R199.

📍Shop G07 31, 177 Oxford Rd, Rosebank, Johannesburg
⭐ 4.6 on Dineplan

A standout on the Jozi dining scene, George’s Grill House in Rosebank takes the burger game very seriously. The stunning interior – with warm lighting, green accents, and leather chairs – sets the tone, but it’s the menu that really delivers. From a 250g patty loaded with mushroom, truffle and cheese, to a steak burger with a 150g piece of fillet, melted cheese and BBQ sauce, there are some gems to dig into! Got a big appetite? The Truffle Wagyu (200g wagyu, truffle-glazed brioche, provolone and truffle mushroom sauce) is the one to order, though the Beef & Crayfish Burger – grain-fed beef with crayfish, dill butter and lemon coriander – makes a strong case for being the most ambitious burger on any menu in Joburg.
