Must-have reservations in June

by | 2 June 2025

As winter sets in across the country, there’s no shortage of exciting new restaurant openings to explore in and around Cape Town and Johannesburg. Whether you’re craving wood-fired pizzas, tacos and margaritas, or hearty shisanyama to warm you up, I’ve rounded up the restaurants that deserve a spot on your must-visit list this June. Some are brand new, others are tried-and-tested, and a few are hidden gems worth travelling for.

Cape Town and the Winelands

Ongetem

(Gardens, Cape Town)

Chef Bertus Basson has brought his signature flair to Cape Town with Ongetem, his new restaurant in Gardens, tucked inside the Canopy by Hilton on Park Road – just off the ever-buzzing Kloof Street. It’s a tribute to Cape Town’s rich mix of cultures and the food that brings them together. Ongetem is all about good food with soul, served in a down-to-earth space with none of the cheffy pretence. The vibe is casual and fun, but the food is taken very seriously. Under the theme of “Butcher, Baker, Cocktail Maker”, you can expect grass-fed fire-cooked meats, Cape-style loaves, comforting baked goodies, and interesting cocktails with loads of personality. It’s quirky, cool, proudly local, and has Cape Town written all over it.

This is a space you can visit for a morning espresso, a cocktail after work, or a soulful dinner with friends. We’re inspired by Cape Town’s multicultural food scene, and we’re not afraid to mix it up – from chakalaka to peri-peri, classic soufflés to curry-leaf cocktails. – Chef Bertus Basson

Mexicola Locale Woodstock

(Woodstock, Cape Town)

One of Hout Bay’s favourite restaurants, Mexicola Locale, has officially opened a second home in the heart of Woodstock. You’ll find the usual suspects on the menu: chunky guac and chips, smoky el pastor and crispy Baja fish tacos, and that famous Mexicola street corn with charred breadcrumbs. They’ve also added Mexican-style breakfasts, perfect for those working in and around the area. Swing by after work for their happy hour (buy-one-get-one cocktails, Monday to Sunday – except Tuesday) from 4 – 6 pm, or make the most of their all-day Taco Tuesday special with any two tacos and a margarita for only R200! Same vibe, same menu favourites – just in a new, more central spot.

Beautiful fresh authentic Mexican food. Staff were great and attentive. Lovely cocktails. Can’t wait to go back.

CAUSE | EFFECT Cocktail Kitchen Accepts Dineplan vouchers

(Rondebosch and V&A Waterfront, Cape Town)

We’re excited to welcome both CAUSE | EFFECT bars – Rondebosch and the V&A Waterfront – to Dineplan. That means you can now book your spot online and skip the wait for your next showstopping cocktail. On the drinks front, you can expect a mix of classic cocktails and totally over-the-top creations (unicorns and rockets included!), where each drink is a sensory adventure. Whereas the food menu covers all bases, from breakfast to hearty mains, sharing plates and generous platters. If you’re a seafood lover, don’t miss the highly-rated seafood platter for two. At Rondebosch, students get a solid 20% off their bill, all day, every day – you just need to flash your student card. Meanwhile, over at the Waterfront, there’s an amazing all-day pizza special every Tuesday where you get any pizza for just R89 – a real steal!

The staff went out of their way to make our evening a night to remember. We loved the seafood and the cocktails were out of this world. Thank you Daniel for making our friend’s birthday special. We just love the energy that this crew gives off. It was an amazing experience. Definitely my favourite hangout place.

Stock & Stable

(Constantia, Cape Town)

Tucked into the High Constantia Centre, Stock & Stable is the latest offering from the team behind Jonkershuis Eatery and Blockhouse Kitchen. Set in the heart of Cape Town’s inner-city wine country, this casual spot focuses on value, quality, and good service – without the fuss. The staff are known for going the extra mile, and the food is consistently raved about in their Dineplan reviews. The European-inspired bistro menu runs from breakfast through to dinner, every day. Stop by for a balanced brekkie, or swing past for lunch or dinner for a hearty bowl of pasta, open sarmie, juicy burger, or one of their New York-style wood-fired pizzas. It’s also a great spot to go for a slice of cake and cuppa for a mid-morning or late-afternoon break.  In summer, grab a table outside under the English Plane trees; in winter, it’s all about getting cosy inside. Once you’ve found it, you’ll want Stock & Stable on your regular rotation.

One of my favourite restaurants, food quality is 10/10.

Madré Stanford

(Stanford, Western Cape)

Since 2005, Chef Madré has been serving up country cooking at its very best – the kind of food that keeps her loyal fans coming back to Stanford time and time again. Set in a charming heritage cottage on Queen Victoria Street, surrounded by mulberry trees, Madré’s is all warmth, welcome, and wholesome food made with love. Everything on the plate is as fresh as it gets – from the catch of the day to the veggies picked straight from her garden. The blackboard menu changes with the seasons, guided by what’s good and what’s growing. It’s honest food, packed with flavour, and made to nourish. If you’re just passing through town or making a special trip out, this little gem is a must-visit. Once you’ve tasted Madré’s cooking, you’ll understand why it’s a local legend.

Had a most enjoyable eating experience at Madré’s. Took our Australian friends there and everything was perfect. Ambience also great!

Zorz Luxury Chisanyama

(Midrand, Gauteng)

Zorz is a new restaurant where luxury dining meets the bold, proudly South African spirit of Chisanyama. The name itself – slang for food – sets the tone for what to expect: laid-back atmosphere, big flavour, and generous portions. Diners rave about the food, and it’s easy to see why. Think succulent crayfish tails grilled over the fire, creamy peri-peri ox livers, melt-in-your-mouth goat stew, and flame-grilled ribs that fall off the bone. It’s hearty, soulful cooking that pairs well with something from the extensive cocktail list or a glass of fine local wine. Inside, the plush all-white décor is understated but luxurious – definitely a spot to dress up and snap a few pics for the ‘Gram (and the lighting’s perfect, by the way).

Amazing time at Zorz as usual. Loved the experience and being able to celebrate my friend’s birthday in style. 10/10 on all the boxes! Appreciate Thato for the best service.

Ghazal Melrose Arch

(Birnam, Johannesburg)

Touted by many as serving the best curries in Joburg, Ghazal has earned its reputation with a menu that’s as big as it is packed with flavour. From buttery naan and crispy rotis to fragrant biryanis and richly spiced chicken, lamb, seafood, and veg curries – this is authentic Indian comfort food. The tandoori meats are perfectly marinated and cooked to smoky, tender perfection. Going with a group is a good call – there’s just too much to try solo. Vegans and vegetarians won’t feel left out either, with plenty of options like the standout aloo palak with chickpea flatbread. Portions are very generous and the service is fast and genuinely friendly. The waitstaff know the menu inside-out and are always happy to steer you towards a new favourite.

Best curry in Joburg! Excellent service too!

Monkey on the Elephant (MOTE) is a vibrant new spot in the heart of Pineslopes, Joburg – perfect for local socialites looking for good food, great cocktails, and a lively atmosphere. Serving up African fusion, the menu includes a mix of small plates like chilli and lime chicken wings, spicy Mozam prawns, and creamy coconut chicken livers.
